President's Update: June 2025
This month marks one year since Professor Deborah McNamara assumed the role of President of RCSI. In this edition, she provides an update on several year-one priorities and highlights some important next steps.
The Surgeon journal is one of the leading multidisciplinary surgical titles. In the coming months, we will share interviews with several recent contributors, going beyond the published article to further explore and discuss the topics and themes. Our first interviewee is Dr Amber Downes MRCSI, who most recently published an article as part of the Special Edition focusing on Surgery and the Environment (October 2024). Her research into Expiry dates in surgical equipment: What are the options was one of the most read articles of last year.
This month we have a round-up of recent meetings - from the Beaumont Cancer Centre Conference to the annual Temporal Bone Course as well as some photos from ASGBI Congress.
We also share news of the appointment of the new National Clinical Advisor in Neurosurgery as well as an update regarding RCSI's support for the urgent implementation of pre-action protocols.
Preparations are underway for the summer Conferrings, which take place in Penang and Dublin in the coming weeks. Plus, save the date for the next Fellows and Members Lunchtime Talk as well as for the Networking Breakfast at the 2025 Millin Meeting.
Also, register now for an online webinar hosted by the Early Career Surgical Network on the topic of How to Get a Consultant Job in Ireland.
The new RCSI Membership Year 2025-2026 has commenced. You can now renew your In Good Standing status to maintain use of your postnominals by making payment through the Fellows and Members Portal. Volume 23, Issue 3 of The Surgeon is now available online via the Portal for all Fellows and Members In Good Standing.
Of interest to many will be the article on Needlestick Injury Incidence and Reporting in Irish Surgical Trainees which was based upon an anonymous survey of surgical trainees. Plus, several colleagues from the Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics in TUH co-authored a review of Female Representation at the Irish Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting, which is published in the June edition.
