Responding to Covid-19
COVID-19 presents an unparalleled global crisis with no community or way of life immune from its impact. No different to every other university, business and family, the pandemic has challenged the RCSI community which mobilised rapidly in response.
Since 1784, our mission of education, research and service has guided our course. This holds true today more than ever. Every action we take now, every decision we make, is aimed at delivering world-class education to our students who find themselves in uncharted territory, leveraging our research capability to contribute to the global effort to combat the virus, and supporting Ireland’s national effort to limit its spread.
Our priority has been to ensure that our students who are due to graduate this year as health professionals were able to complete their degrees so they can join the workforce to help meet the needs of our communities nationally and internationally.
The national and global response to the spread of COVID-19 continues to develop quickly and the global research community’s collective knowledge of the virus is growing by the day. Our researchers have a number of other innovative research projects in the pipeline ranging from diagnostic technologies with the potential to support the triage of vulnerable respiratory patients to the exploration of potential drug treatments for COVID-19 with industry partners.
RCSI’s research centre on skin wounds and trauma (SWaT), based in our School of Nursing and Midwifery, is working on the development of strategies to help support intensive care staff to combat the development of pressure ulcers in patients who are moved into the prone position to promote oxygenation during their treatment for COVID-19.
As Ireland’s only singularly focused health sciences university and the country’s professional training body for surgery, RCSI has the expertise and capacity to support the health service, which we are doing in a number of ways from supporting training for contact tracers, fast-tracking additional health care professionals, supporting GPs to minimise hospital referrals, bringing expert driven information to the public and supporting Government decision-making.
